Someone once asked me many years back, “if you could have dinner with any three people dead or alive who would they be?” My first candidate was offered with little hesitation… Tupac Shakur.
To this day, 2pac would still have to be in my top 3 ‘dinner dates’ and an Obey poster with his iconic image still hangs in the living room of my condo. Despite being a white kid growing up mostly in an upper middle-class suburban neighborhood, Pac's lyrics resonated and spoke to me in a way that offered insight, empathy and compassion into his community at large and the struggles they continue to have to endure as a result of "America's" oppression.
I can still recall the first time I watched Tupac Resurrection and felt the way Tupac proclaimed, “I may not change the world, but I guarantee I will spark the brain that changes the world.” It was said with such a conviction and truth that really changed the way I not only looked at 2pac, but also at myself and the way I wanted to look at the world and my environment. What I admired and respected most about Tupac’s position was that he felt he had an inherent responsibility to change the status quo... and that he wasn't leaving this world without doing so... or at least trying his damnedest.
There is no doubt that Tupac possessed a level of genius that provided him the ability to create a socially impactful legacy that would far surpass any of his peers and continue to serve as the pillar for which all other hip-hop artist compare... or don't.
Tupac will always remain a source of inspiration for Y B ÷ and the power we know its message holds. “I’m not saying Y B ÷ will change the world, but it will spark the brain that will change the world.”
